Why Are Eye Tests Important?

Eye tests assess far more than just your ability to seeโ€”they also evaluate the health of your eyes and can detect early signs of eye conditions such as glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration. In some cases, an eye test can even help identify underlying health issues like diabetes or high blood pressure.

Additionally, eye tests can help diagnose and manage common conditions such as:

  • Dry Eye Syndrome โ€“ This occurs when your eyes do not produce enough tears or the tears evaporate too quickly, leading to discomfort, redness, and irritation. If left untreated, dry eye can affect your vision and eye health. Our optometrists can provide tailored treatments to help relieve symptoms.

  • Blepharitis โ€“ A common condition causing inflammation of the eyelids, leading to redness, irritation, and flaky skin at the base of the eyelashes. Routine eye examinations help in diagnosing blepharitis early, allowing for effective management through proper eyelid hygiene and treatment options.

  • Floaters & Flashes โ€“ Floaters are small spots or shapes that drift across your vision, while flashes appear as brief bursts of light. While these can be harmless, they may indicate a more serious issue, such as retinal detachment. A comprehensive eye test can help determine whether further treatment is necessary.

Children’s Eye Tests

Regular eye tests are essential for children to ensure proper vision development and early detection of any issues that could impact their learning and daily activities. Poor vision can affect a childโ€™s ability to read, concentrate, and perform well in school.

At Martin Christopher Opticians, we provide child-friendly eye tests that are designed to be engaging and comfortable for young patients. Our optometrists will check for common childhood vision issues such as:

  • Short-sightedness (Myopia) โ€“ Difficulty seeing distant objects clearly

  • Long-sightedness (Hyperopia) โ€“ Trouble focusing on nearby objects

  • Astigmatism โ€“ Blurred vision due to an irregularly shaped cornea

  • Lazy Eye (Amblyopia) โ€“ Reduced vision in one eye that needs early treatment

  • Squints (Strabismus) โ€“ Eyes that are not aligned properly

We recommend that children have their first eye test around the age of 3, or sooner if you notice any signs of vision problems. NHS-funded eye tests are available for children under 16, or under 19 if in full-time education.
